"The problem with academics is they feel the need to be smarter than truth."--Thomas Larkin
Truth and Beauty:
In 1586 the courtier-poet Sir Philip Sidney died from wounds suffered in a battle with the Spaniards at Zutphen, in the Netherlands. The battle itself was less than the high-point of English military glory: getting things reversed in the fog and the dark, the commanders positioned themselves in front of rather than behind their troops, and so were the first targets of the Spanish muskets at daybreak.
Embracing a historic change, the Boy Scouts of America announced plans to admit girls into the Cub Scouts starting next year and to establish a new program for older girls using the same curriculum as the Boy Scouts. (wsj)

Idiocy and cruelty are patented by the self declared intellectuals of the Left. It is not new. Here is King writing about the death of the French writer, Anatole France. "By 1924, Andre Breton and others had split away from the impromptu anarchy and nonsense poetry of the Dadaists, and towards a more directed "Surrealist Revolution." Their first public, orchestrated "scandal" was directed towards France and his funeral: they asked for official permission to open the casket and slap his corpse. Denied this, they handed out a pamphlet on the day of France's funeral entitled "A Corpse," in which Breton applauded the national tribute: "Let it be a holiday when we bury trickery, tradition, patriotism, opportunism, skepticism, and heartlessness.... His corpse should be put in an empty quayside box of the old books which he loved so much and thrown into the Seine. Dead, this man must produce dust no longer." Matching symbolism with symbolism, "A Corpse" was distributed among the estimated crowd of 200,000 which gathered to pay tribute to France, the funeral parade beginning in front of the Institute of France, near the bookshop of France's father, and proceeding along the Avenue des Champs-ElysÃes. Three days later Breton published his first "Manifesto of Surrealism.""
A panel of experts to the Food and Drug Administration voted unanimously in favor of Spark Therapeutics' inject-able therapy, which aims to improve vision in patients with a rare mutation that gradually destroys normal vision. The vote amounts to a recommendation to approve the therapy. Gene therapy is starting.
Apple CEO Tim Cook says it is more important to learn how to code than it is to learn English as a second language. "I'm not telling people not to learn English in some form -- but I think you understand what I am saying is that this is a language that you can [use to] express yourself to 7 billion people in the world."
Forty-two percent of Americans live without a spouse or partner, up from 39 percent in 2007, according to the Pew Research Center’s analysis of U.S. Census Bureau figures. For those under the age of 35 years old, 61 percent live without a spouse or partner, up 5 percentage points from a decade ago.
The higher number of spouseless households comes as the marriage rate declines precipitously. Just half of American adults are married, down from 72 percent in 1960.
What has happened to Weinstein and why? Why has the feeding frenzy emerged now; it certainly doesn't have anything to do with virtue or responsibility.
In July 2016, a Tumblr page linked to Russia's now-notorious Internet Research Agency promoted a contest encouraging people sympathetic to the Black Lives Matter movement to play the game near famous sites of police brutality. Players were told to change the names of their charcters to the names of the victims of those incidents-- an apparent effort to inflame racial tensions. The Tumblr page was linked to Do Not Shoot Us, a multi-platform campaign designed to mimic aspects of Black Lives Matter.
Steve Wozniak, the Apple co-founder who changed the world alongside Steve Jobs, has today announced the launch of Woz U, a digital institute aimed at helping folks not only figure out what type of tech job they might be best at, but train for it.
The dark web -- a pack of websites that hides their physical location with special software -- is always a precarious place, with the FBI shutting down massive criminal networks, or competing sites hacking one another. Now, someone is trying to take the four largest drug marketplaces offline by flooding it with traffic.
One of the economic realities is that the SUV market profits are underwriting the losses of electric cars. So fazing out gasoline-based SUVs over the next years will have what impact on the electric car?
I don't know why the Brits attacked the potato crop in the Land of Ire, they could have done as much damage outlawing sunblock.

A good line from Will: The faux nationalists of the "alt-right" and their fellow travelers like Stephen Bannon, although fixated on protecting America from imported goods, have imported the blood-and-soil ethno-tribalism that stains the continental European right.
From Hazlett: "Over the course of the Obama administration, U.S. corporate profits rose by a healthy 11 percent per year. But workers' pay didn't keep pace, and median wage growth was a paltry 0.6 percent per year. This disconnect between profits and wages is a radical departure from previous economic norms. Workers used to get a 1.1 percent raise for a 1 percent increase in corporate profits. Now the pass-through to workers is closer to 0.4 percent. Why did it change so much? Because the profits are offshore, benefiting other nations' workers. In 2016, U.S. firms kept 71 percent of foreign-earned profits abroad. What would happen if they didn't do that? A simple back-of-the envelope calculation suggests U.S. workers in 2016 would have received a raise of nearly 1 percent. What if these firms didn't do that for the next 8 years? The median U.S. household would get a $4,000 real income raise."

Sidney was a pioneer in the sonnet (the Astrophel and Stella series), and his Arcadia is a major contribution to pastoral literature. His Defence of Poesie was an early and thoroughly Renaissance argument for the truth of "fiction." When Sidney examines the mere "Logic" of the Astronomer, Philosopher, Lawyer, Grammarian, Arithmetician, Physician and Metaphysician, he concludes that "of all writers under the Sunne, the Poet is the least lyer."
Opponents object to the top cut as a tax break for the rich, while proponents, including the president himself, say it would stimulate economic growth and create jobs. But the real question is: Whose money is it? What is the source of the power that allows people to appropriate other people's earnings for their own use, well intended or not?

Data is "memory without history." A remarkable observation. Sounds like Alzheimer's.
"I submit further that the great virtue of the free market type of economic organization is not its tested ability to bring a high level of living to those who work under it; rather, it is that it is the only type of economic organization which is consistent with the maintenance of those individual liberties which are to be prized more dearly than the material benefits of an efficient economy."--Rogge

If there is ever a contest for words that substitute for thought, “diversity” should be recognized as the undisputed world champion. You don’t need a speck of evidence, or a single step of logic, when you rhapsodize about the supposed benefits of diversity. The very idea of testing this wonderful, magical word againwith the entertainment industry's widely self-proclaimed high-mindedness.
Pay-TV is continuing to shrink as households move to internet providers like Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu. Their stocks are beginning to decline too. AT&T and DirectTV are actually beginning to offer cheaper internet services--with vastly lower margins.
Martin Scorsese inveighs against two conjoined trends -- the widespread reporting of box-office results and the grading of movies by consumers on CinemaScore and by critics on Rotten Tomatoes -- and blames it for "a tone that is hostile to serious filmmakers." In particular, he contends that this hostile environment is worsening "as film criticism written by passionately engaged people with actual knowledge of film history has gradually faded from the scene."

Despite the fervor with which demographic ‘‘diversity’’ is proclaimed as a prime virtue — without a speck of evidence as to its supposed benefits — diversity of ideas gets no such respect.

To go between Washington and Pyongyang at this nuclear moment is to be struck, most of all, by how little the two understand each other. In eighteen years of reporting, I’ve never felt as much uncertainty at the end of a project, a feeling that nobody – not the diplomats, the strategists, or the scholars who have devoted their lives to the subject – is able to describe with confidence how the other side thinks.
