Separation

Separation of government functions one from the other and from external influences has been a basic notion in the U.S.. The concern over Russian influence in the government is perfectly reasonable. The "silos" of executive, legislative and judiciary powers are ingenious and crucial. The caution on mixing religion and the state perfectly sensible.

All of these separations are created to avoid contaminating the interest of the  one with the interest of the other.

So, how about separation of state and education? Is the independence of the education of the country in any way less important? Is there any reason in the world for the first written democracy with its anxiety over the power and influence of the state to allow the state to define the content and objective of education?
