Sunday/Versus the World

                                                Sunday/Versus the World

Jesus said to his apostles:
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me,
and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
and whoever does not take up his cross
and follow after me is not worthy of me.
Whoever finds his life will lose it,
and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

A harsh gospel that unlinks us with the worldly attributes that we recognize today: Family, tribalism, identity, self-determination. And one that the evangelists repeated. It demands self-denial and sacrifice. One wonders how compatible such a message is in a world of success and comfort. In this land, even luxury.

Thomas à Kempiss wrote that if there were a better way to salvation than suffering, Christ would have told us.

To Keep a True Lent

Is this a fast, to keep
The larder lean?
And clean
From fat of veals and sheep ?

Is it to quit the dish
Of flesh, yet still
To fill
The platter high with fish ?

Is it to fast an hour,
Or ragg’d to go,
Or show
A downcast look and sour ?

No ; ‘tis a fast to dole
Thy sheaf of wheat,
And meat,
Unto the hungry soul.

It is to fast from strife,
From old debate
And hate ;
To circumcise thy life.

To show a heart grief-rent ;
To starve thy sin,
Not bin ;
And that’s to keep thy Lent.

Robert Herrick 1648
