IRS

The Congress is considering impeaching the head of the IRS for, essentially, politicizing the organization. Here is a summary of the argument as presented in a George Will column:

"At the IRS, Exempt Organizations Director Lois Lerner participated in delaying for up to five years — effectively denying — tax-exempt status for, and hence suppressing political advocacy by, conservative groups. She retired after refusing to testify to congressional committees, invoking the Fifth Amendment’s protection against self-incrimination.
Koskinen, who became commissioner after Lerner left, failed to disclose the disappearance of emails germane to a congressional investigation of IRS misbehavior. Under his leadership, the IRS failed to comply with a preservation order pertaining to an investigation. He did not testify accurately or keep promises made to Congress. Subpoenaed documents, including 422 tapes potentially containing 24,000 Lerner emails, were destroyed. He falsely testified that the Government Accountability Office’s report on IRS practices found “no examples of anyone who was improperly selected for an audit.”
In June testimony to the House Judiciary Committee, Jonathan Turley of the George Washington University Law School noted that the Obama administration stands accused of “effectively weaponizing the IRS.” And the Koskinen controversy comes as Congress “is facing an unprecedented erosion of its authority vis-a-vis the executive branch.” The “increasing obstruction and contempt displayed by federal agencies in congressional investigations reflects the loss of any credible threat of congressional action. Congress has become a paper tiger within our tripartite system — a branch that often expresses outrage, yet fails to enforce its constitutional authority.”

The Koskinen controversy, Turley said, “falls at the very crossroads of expanding executive power, diminishing congressional authority, and the rise of the Fourth Branch,” which consists of “federal agencies that exercise increasingly unilateral and independent powers.” "

TheTolerence of Abuse

Catherine Engelbrecht and her family run a small oil-field machinery business in Texas. She also works as a poll-watcher and, In 2009, after seeing numerous instances of what she thought was voter fraud, she founded two conservative political groups, the King Street Patriots and True the Vote. In 2010 she applied to the IRS for non-profit status for those groups. She appeared in front of the House Oversight Committee the first week of February 2014 and the following is her response to questions from Ohio Rube-publican James Jordan:

"Ms. Engelbrecht, in the first 20 years of business, did OSHA ever visit your place of business?”
“No sir.”
“Never once?”
“No sir.”
“After you filed the [tax-exempt application for King Street Patriots], OSHA visited then, right?”
“Yes sir.”
“In the first 20 years of business did the [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms] ever come to your business?”
“No sir.”
“And they came a couple times once you filed your application?”
“Yes sir.”
“And in your first 20 years of business, did the IRS ever audit you?”
“No sir.”
“But once you filed your application, they audited you?”
“Many times.”
“And in your first 20 years of business, did the FBI ever visit you?”
“No sir.”
“But once you filed your application, did they visit you?”
“Six times.”

What a coincidence.

IRS and the Integrity of Government

There's an old joke about a guy who goes to a boxing match and a hockey game breaks out. With government watching you never have to worry about integrity breaking out.

'The Treasury inspector general (IG) whose report helped drive the IRS targeting controversy says it limited its examination to conservative groups because of a request from House Republicans.
A spokesman for Russell George, Treasury’s inspector general for tax administration, said they were asked by House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) “to narrowly focus on Tea Party organizations.”'

The quote above is from The Hill and switches the responsibility of abuse of the IRS from the Democrats to the Republicans. The Democrats are thrilled, have declared themselves innocent and accused the Republicans of mendacity and hypocrisy.

Mendacity and hypocrisy seems to be the order of the day. But creeps, liars, posers and self interest aside, could we have a little focus on the integrity of government? Will someone please step forward and raise the real questions here: How can anyone use the IRS as a weapon? Why isn't anyone who tries to do it in jail? How does the IRS seem so compliant in these requests and why aren't those compliant guys in jail?
