The Responsibilities of New Americans

The reason why the church, Christian values and family are targets of the left is they want people’s loyalty and allegiance to be to the state. The church, Christianity and the family stand in the way.--Williams


The Education Department is looking into a tactic that has been used in some Chicago suburbs, in which wealthy parents transfer legal guardianship of their college-bound children to relatives or friends so the teens can claim financial aid.


A model is being criticized for saying she was transgender when she was not. But she can identify as one, right? So, what's the problem?

The United Nations reports that global food production per capita has increased by about a third over the last 25 years, and that the proportion of the global population that is undernourished has declined also by about a third.

The ride share service that offers transportation ranging from cars to scooters is suspending its e bike offering in the San Francisco Bay Area after two of them caught fire. Lyft says it has the biggest offering of shared bikes and scooters in the U.S. It introduced ebikes to the San Francisco area just last month, and there have been over 100 million electric bike rides there so far. Procter&Gamble  on Tuesday blamed its recent $8 billion writedown on its men’s grooming brand Gillette on millennial men who aren’t shaving as much as previous generations. The U.S. men’s market for shaving products has shrunk by over 11% in the past five years, according to data from Euromonitor. The U.S. men’s razors and blades market was worth $2.4 billion 2015 and declined to $2.2 billion in 2018, according to the same report.
There is no mention of the possibility that Gillette's ad campaigned angered people, as it did me.

The Nobel Prize has been awarded to 860 people since its inception in 1901. The prizewinner distribution: Americans (375), United Kingdom (131) Germany (108), France (69) and Sweden (32); that’s 83% of Nobel Prizes won. The large majority of other Nobel winners are mostly westerners. Japan has 27 Nobel Prize winners, but their first winner was awarded in 1949, after WWII led Japan to became more westernized.

Baseball’s future has arrived in the Atlantic League with the introduction an automated strike zone.

Solecism means:

It is from Greek soloikismos, from soloikos (speaking incorrectly; literally, inhabitant of Soloi) after Soloi, an ancient Athenian colony in Cilicia where a dialect considered as substandard was spoken.

On this day in 1776, members of Congress signed an enlarged copy of the Declaration of Independence Exactly one month before the signing of the document, Congress had accepted a resolution put forward by Richard Henry Lee that stated “Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”
Congress adopted the more poetic Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, two days later, on July 4.


        The Responsibilities of New Americans

Recently a couple in our neighborhood became American citizens. I was surprised when I found myself reflecting on how brave a decision that was in light of all the criticism America seems to be receiving.


“We have among us people,” said Abraham Lincoln in 1858, “whose ancestors have come hither and settled here, finding themselves our equals in all things. If they look back through this history to trace their connection by blood, they find they have none, but when they look through that old Declaration of Independence, they find . . . ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,’ and then they feel . . . that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh of the men who wrote that Declaration, and so they are.” 

This is a very concise and simple assessment of the development of the nation. And it is being said that Trump does not understand this essential quality of the nation.

It is unfair to compare Trump to Lincoln but there is another side to this coin. This country has always been afflicted by immigrants who did not understand--or perhaps approve of--the nation's core either. "Liberty" is itself a revolutionary concept, far more revolutionary and new than those philosophies that are variations of the themes of "right to rule," "taking the incompetent people into protective custody" and "prohibiting people the right to fail." All of these beliefs default to a powerful intrusive government for protection and guidance. It doesn't matter whether that type of government works; the Americans believe that type of government is wrong. And in every generation some new immigrants come here with the plans of reforming that essential quality. European anarchists, European communists, socialists of various stripes--all come to the nation like the woman who says of her fiancé, "I love him and want to change him."

She does not love him.
