In today's gospel, Christ talks of the Son of Man coming on a cloud at the Last Judgment and warns that people be careful lest their "hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness and cares of this life." Now there is an interesting grouping: "surfeiting," "drunkenness" and "cares of this life." All are distractions from the real world of importance, even the "cares of this life" which might be demanding of serious and responsible action. Christ again places daily living low on the hierarchy of truth.
And Christ's warning is "watch out," or, in some translations, "be vigilant." This is not just "be observant." It is a demand for care from strength, caution with an edge.
In this demand for spiritual reckoning Christ implies a very real and strong core.
