Today's gospel has Christ return to His home town where He first astonishes the people in the temple with His wisdom. Then they reject Him--"And they took offense at him." His friends and neighbors took offense at Him! Christ sounds almost bitter: “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.”
He is unable--or unwilling--to perform great signs there, perhaps showing a linkage between spiritual acceptance and spiritual reception as on the road to Emmaus.
There is a dreadful schism here, a separation of blood ties and rejection of history. And Christ moves on.
