As we have seen, the poorer sectors of American society, as defined by income, are a transient group, disproportionately of the younger and less experienced workers, and no one remains younger for life. The notion that the citizen is mobile in a free economic system is upsetting to those with determinist views. It muddles easy generalizations and diminishes their proponents. And, of course, it undermines the very glue the Left relies upon: despair.

When freedom has promise, it is the Left that is hopeless.
