Cab Thoughts 7/4/13

Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value.
~Albert Einstein

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy of about 200 billion stars 50,000 light years wide. The sun and our solar system is 4.5 billion years old but the oldest star in the Milky Way is 13.5 billion, close to the origin of the universe. Most of the stars are more central, our sun is more peripheral. Opposite us, outside our galaxy, about 78,000 light years away, is the Sagittarius Galaxy. Discovered in 1994, it is a dwarf and is gradually being sucked into the Milky Way where it will be destroyed.

Jane Austen might be the new face on the £10 note, says the outgoing governor of the Bank of England.

The word "Hindu" is not found in any of the classical writings of India. Nor can it be traced to the classical Indian languages, such as Sanskrit or Tamil. In fact, the word 'Hinduism' has absolutely no origins within India itself. The historian C. J. Fuller writes the word 'Hindu' originally meant something geographical, not cultural or religious. There is a river called Sindhu bordering the northwestern provinces of India and in Parsee, the Sanskrit sound s converts to h. So, for the Moslem invaders, Sindhu became Hindu and the inhabitants of this tract of land they called 'Hindus'. He compares it to 'Semitism' which, like 'Hinduism,' merely denotes geographical location and broadly includes Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

The EEOC recently warned employers they could be considered guilty of "race discrimination if they choose law-abiding applicants over applicants with criminal convictions."

Nissan will be running its electric ZEOD RC prototype, which it says will reach speeds in excess of 300 kilometers per hour (KM/h), which is around 185MPH in next year's Le Mans as an Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s ‘Garage 56′ entry, which is an additional spot for cars that showcase new, innovative technology. .

The speech center (Broca's) is localized in the brain's left hemisphere in about 95 percent of right-handers and 70 percent of left-handers.

According to Wikipedia, the Great Pacific garbage patch is a gyre (a ringlike system of ocean currents rotating clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere) of marine debris in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135°W to 155°W and 35°N and 42°N. The patch extends over an indeterminate area, with estimates ranging very widely depending on the degree of plastic concentration used to define the affected area. Interestingly, it was predicted in a 1988 paper published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) of the United States before it was discovered.
The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. Despite its size and density, the patch is not visible from satellite photography, since it consists primarily of suspended particulates in the upper water column. Since plastics break down to even smaller polymers, concentrations of submerged particles are not visible from space, nor do they appear as a continuous debris field. Instead, the patch is defined as an area in which the mass of plastic debris in the upper water column is significantly higher than average.
It is evaluated by sampling but, as it is poorly seen, its size and density is only estimated.

Cesar Aira's new book, "The Hare,"is about an ernest man's search for a flying rabbit. The wild and crazy plot is typical of Aira but some of his work has a very serious basis. Reviews are cautious; he is not always up to the egalitarian sanctimony of his reviewers. Amazingly he has written over fifty novels. He writes only one page a day and never revises.

On the cover of The New Yorker is a drawing of Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street snuggling on a couch as they watch the Supreme Court on T.V.. In response to a 2011 online petition calling for Bert and Ernie to marry, the Sesame Workshop’s Facebook page wrote:“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics…they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Obama has said he "would not scramble jets" for Snowden. I would hope not. But it is a peculiar thing fora guy who would not send a gunship to protect his own State Department employees to say.

Paula Deen should claim a diagnosis of Tourette's and start a non-profit.

NASA is planning its first solar sail mission, perhaps as early as 2014. The mission is called The Sunjammer Project after Arthur C. Clarke's 1964 short story about outer-space solar sail racing. NASA describes a solar sail craft as "a huge, ultra-thin sail unfurling in space, using the pressure of sunlight to provide propellant-free transport, hovering and exploration capabilities." This will be news to the atrociously bewigged Rev. Ernest Angley who, in periodic anti-scientific outbursts, would cry "There is no solar weeyyynd!"

“The aluminum bat is probably one of the single biggest reasons why people don’t handle the bat like we used to be taught to handle a bat. The sweet spot on a wood bat is three inches long and it’s about a quarter-inch wide. The sweet spot on an aluminum bat is about an inch-and-a-half wide and about six inches long. You can cheat you can get out there and hook. You don’t have to worry about getting jammed as much.”--Clint Hurdle

The Education Department is investigating some 20 school districts across the U.S. for allegedly racist disciplinary policies that have a "disparate impact" on black students. Faced with the threat of reduced federal funding, some districts already have set caps on the number of blacks who can be suspended for violent behavior.

One popular way to explain the apparent progress in evolution is as a biological arms race (a metaphor coined by Julian Huxley). Through natural selection, prey animals get faster and so in tandem do predators.

would like to know more about the disciplinary policies that affect a higher proportion of minority students. I wonder if the students can be trained not to do these things. Wonder if the offenses are reviewed in detail before the start of school. Rehearsed and practiced.

I bet they are not.
