"Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." -Frederic Bastiat, 1848

China has now eclipsed Europe as Russia's biggest, and most strategic natural gas client.

According to Capital IQ, the S&P 500 has climbed an average of 15.1% in the calendar years since 1945 with a Republican-controlled Congress and a Democratic president. That's the best performance for any of the possible political scenarios, narrowly edging out when the GOP controls both Congress and the White House.
The worst political scenario for stock prices, historically speaking, has been when there's a Republican president and a split Congress. The S&P 500 has increased an average of just 3.5% in that situation, Capital IQ said.

Loretta Lynch, a New York prosecutor, is in line to replace Eric Holder as Attorney General. It has been said her nomination will be an inspiration to women, children and Blacks everywhere. I will settle for honesty and an IQ over 90.

According to the "New Yorker", the underground economy  totals about $2 trillion a year in the US. And the "lost" tax revenue is in the neighborhood of $400 billion a year.
Obama in China. According to the press, and the President, the most significant announcements in Obama and Xi’s statements to reporters were a joint rollout of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and an agreement to promote greater cooperation between the U.S. and Chinese militaries.
The climate announcement calls for the U.S. to cut carbon emissions 26-28 percent by 2025 and for China to end growth of greenhouse gas output by 2030, or potentially sooner. The commitments are not binding and don’t amount to any kind of formal pact, but both economic giants hope the moves will prod other countries to make serious commitments to rein in emissions believed to be fueling global warming.
“This is a major milestone in the U.S.-China relationship, and it shows what’s possible when we work together on an urgent global challenge,” Obama declared.
Does this sound like a major milestone?

Politico and the New Republic have both published tough pieces on Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett at roughly the same time. Coincidence?
jubilee: noun: 1. A special anniversary of an event, especially a 50th anniversary. 2. Rejoicing or celebration. A word with an interesting origin. From Old French jubile, from Latin jubilaeus, and Greek iobelaios, from Hebrew yobel (ram, ram's horn trumpet). Traditionally a jubilee year was announced by blowing a ram's horn. Earliest documented use: 1382.

The Mariana Trench or Marianas Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands. It is the deepest part of the world's oceans, about  1,580 miles long with an average width of only  43 miles. It reaches a maximum-known depth of 6.831 miles (36,070 ± 131 ft) at the Challenger Deep, a small slot-shaped valley in its floor, at its southern end.
At the bottom of the trench the water column above exerts a pressure of 15,750 pounds per square inch, over 1000 times the  atmospheric pressure at sea level. It is said that microbes live there.
Novelist Michael Chabon will write the lyrics to more than half of the tracks on Mark Ronson's upcoming album. "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay was the first book that I can really say I didn't want to ever end and when it did I was in tears," Ronson said.

There is a theory that divided governments--between the parties of the administration and the legislative branches--marginalizes the radicals of both parties and force accommodation and compromise.

Over $1,700,000,000,000 ($1.7 trillion) has been spent on installing wind and solar devices in recent years with the sole objective of reducing global CO2 emissions. New renewables have not even replaced lost nuclear generating capacity since 1999.
Who is...Elizabeth Mackintosh?

How is it possible that the coal unions backed the Democrats in this election? The EPA is closing mines all over the country and un-employing thousands and thousands of miners. This is a matter of Progressive policy; the use of coal is a mortal sin in the Progressive dogma. Yet the unions backed them.
They probably have some larger, optimistic global vision.

The Rockefellers have announced that their $860 million philanthropy portfolio will divest itself of assets in fossil-fuel companies.

Philippa Langley is an amateur historian with a passion for Richard III. Her research took her into Leicester, and she had a strange, bizarre experience in a car park in Leicester, where she suddenly thought, for no particular reason at all, that she was standing on Richard's grave. There was no real objective reason for believing that but she dug and found his grave. There is a new book out on Richard by Mike Pitts but the classic is "Daughter of Time " by Josephine Tey, the pen name of the playwright Elizabeth Mackintosh.

Sports Illustrated estimated in 2009 that 78 percent of NFL players are bankrupt or facing serious financial stress within two years of ending their playing careers and that 60 percent of NBA players are broke within five years of retiring from the game.

Brumaire was the second month in the French Republican Calendar. The month was named after the French word brume (fog) which occurs frequently in France at that time of the year. It often refers to the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire in the year VIII (9 November 1799), by which General Bonaparte overthrew the government of the Directory to replace it with the Consulate. It signaled the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of the Napoleon dictatorship/monarchy.
“The Three-Body Problem,” the first book in the best-selling apocalyptic space opera trilogy by Liu Cixin. Translated by Ken Liu, an award-winning science fiction writer in his own right who is based in the United States (the men are not related), it is one of the few Chinese science fiction novels to be translated into English.
“There has been a greater demand for people to call and talk to exorcists,” Father Vince Lampert, an exorcist for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, told International Business Times. He is one of 50 Vatican-trained exorcists in the U.S.. 50!
