Ferguson

A detective I know says that all the major American cities are putting their law enforcement vacation days on hold in preparation for the coming grand jury decision in Ferguson, Mo.. They expect another explosive catharsis from the angst in the Black community, an exorcism of some deep inner evil. And, of course, the drowning of some witches. This apparently will be worse than the Irish riots after the murder of the Kennedys.
Tolerance can be as dangerous as benighted symbolism; sometimes it conceals indifference. But ours is a culture of growing passivity in the face of continuous outrageous behavior. In some cultures it might be criticized as nihilistic. Often it is simple cowardice.
