Cab Thoughts 11/8/14

Carefree, mocking, violent--
That is what Wisdom wants us to be.
She is a woman. She loves
Only a man of war.--Zarathustra

The money-laundering trial of two former Vatican Bank executives is delayed because the the case file is missing.

Clay Aiken, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in North Carolina's Second District and a former 'American Idol' contestant, lost.

Journalist Eric Zemmour is the author of "Le Suicide Francais" (French Suicide). He has a lot of nasty and impolite opinions but believes that the collaborating Vichy government is at the heart of what he sees as French problems. "I felt compelled to include this in the book," he says, "because guilt over Vichy lies at the very heart of French self-loathing, even today. ... Every time we want to send illegal immigrants back, the elites scream that it smacks of Vichy. If we encourage foreigners to assimilate, we're accused of colonialism and Vichy. It always comes back to Vichy."
If France wants to reverse its decline, Zemmour says, it has to cut through its Vichy complex and start anew.

A recent survey by Old Dominion University indicates that there are more than a million registered voters who are not citizens, and who therefore are not legally entitled to vote.

Recondite a: ['re-kên-dIt] Definition: Deep, profound, complex (knowledge, understanding); secret, hidden, out of view (motivation, principles); obscure, abstruse (source, cause).

The ISIS terror organization continues to bring in about $1 million a day in new revenue. Illegal drug sales and unlawful mining activity bring organized crime groups in Colombia about $14 billion a year, a government official said.

Facebook paid 21 billion dollars for WhatsApp.  WhatsApp  lost $232 million in just the first six months of 2014 and generated only $15 million.

In an unstable world, there is always remarkable stability at the top: The Left Party, widely seen as the successor to the SED, East Germany's communist party, is expected to head the government of a German state for the first time since reunification, after the Social Democrats voted to enter a coalition with them in the state of Thuringia.

Many of the Left Party's leadership were senior figures in the old SED, which ruled East Germany as a single-party state.

The Center for Disease Control has removed a warning from its website saying that Ebola can, in certain circumstances, spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. It now states that there is no evidence it is spread in either way.

Who was ....Mary Mallon?

Pressman wrote "Hot Gates" about Thermopylae (which became the movie "300") and at the end of the book theorized on the real strength of the Spartan military. He thought it was Love, the love each soldier had for his fellow soldiers. It is a disturbing thesis that "love" among fighting men is a high point in human society. That is in the Lone Survivor as well. The second question it asks is, is the society worth their sacrifice?

There is angst over the idea of quarantine for higher risk Ebola. Too much, they cry. But didn't this administration ground the Dreamliner for a battery fire? And didn't they stop flights to Tel Aviv because of a single mortar shell a mile away? No one can argue with someone being cautious; its inconsistency and the appearance of dogma that upsets people.

Voting fraud is difficult in the U.S.. A.G. Eric Holder says there is no fraud to merit ID cards then sends thousands of agents to the polls to discourage this rare fraud.  The book "Injustice" by J. Christian Adams, a Justice Department attorney, details with inside knowledge the voter frauds known to the Justice Department, and ignored by Holder. One  of these frauds involved sending out absentee ballots to people who had never asked for them. Then a political operator would show up — uninvited — the day the ballots arrived and "help" the voter to fill them out. Sometimes the intruders simply took the ballots, filled them out and forged the signatures of the voters.

UPMC  in Pittsburgh has contracts with NIH worth $451 Million.

John Donne, the great metaphysical poet, studied at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities in his early teen years. He did not take a degree at either school, because to do so would have meant subscribing to the Thirty-nine Articles, the doctrine that defined Anglicanism. (Donne was a Catholic.) At age twenty he studied law at Lincoln’s Inn. Two years later he succumbed to religious pressure and joined the Anglican Church after his younger brother, convicted for his Catholic loyalties, died in prison.

99% of the bills presented to the Senate have been tabled and not voted on. Reid, of course, controls these decisions. So the belabored obstructionist is.......who?

Golden oldie:

We need a new word for what maniacs do. The "fighter" who lines townspeople up and murders them is not exactly a "fighter." A man who straps bombs to himself, walks into a group of strangers and detonates them is not performing a "martyr's" act; a martyr is self-absorbed by his personal vision and ideal; animosity is quite distant from it.

Is Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson a modern Kafka?

Cameron's proposal to put a cap on low-skilled migrants from the rest of the EU, which comes largely under pressure from the anti-European UK Independence Party (UKIP), has drawn fire from Merkel who reportedly said it is a deal-breaker if Great Britain is to stay in the EU.

The leader of the World Health Organization criticized the drug industry on Monday, saying that the drive for profit was one reason no vaccine had yet been found for Ebola.
The Ebola virus was discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, then known as Zaire, in 1976. But because it was confined to impoverished African countries, Dr. Chan said, there was no incentive to develop a vaccine until this year, when Ebola became a broader threat. “A profit-driven industry does not invest in products for markets that cannot pay,” she said. “W.H.O. has been trying to make this issue visible for ages. Now people can see for themselves.”
The mechanism of science is very complex and financial reward, historically at least, is minor. How many people believe that science inquiry is motivated by profit? Perhaps she means "technology." Should those who misunderstand science so much have any influence upon it?

AAAAAAAaaaaaaannnnndddddddd.....a picture of sweet Mary Mallon:
Mary Mallon, known as "Typhoid Mary," was immune to the typhoid she carried. Working as a cook, she spread the disease in New York and ended up quarantined on Brother Island (above) for more than two decades.
