Fool's Gold
A rich man put more than $2 million in five separate 'chests,' and hid them across the United States. Then he left a book of clues to help treasure hunters find them. Sounds like a parable.
Jon Collins-Black, a Bitcoin investor, spent the last few years assembling valuable items ranging from shipwreck-salvaged gold doubloons to rare Pokémon cards, all to stash them in secret locations for treasure hunters to find.
Collins-Black has paired the journey with a book of clues, “There’s Treasure Inside,” which is filled with puzzles, maps, and all the clues needed to discover the location of the treasure chests.
According to Collons-Black, none of the chests is located in a dangerous location, and all are somewhere in the open, not buried.
Each is within 3 miles of a public road, and none is on private property.
Around 2010, New Mexico art dealer Forrest Fenn hid a chest of gold and jewels said to be worth about $2 million somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, and released a poem filled with clues that led to its location.
Jack Stuef, a 32-year-old medical student, found the treasure in 2020. What at the time sounded like a fun thing was not. Five people died in various searches, four lawsuits were filed--including one accusing Fenn of colluding with Taylor Swift, whom the plaintiff said had hidden clues in her lyrics.
As Mr. Fenn's lawyer, Karl Sommer, put it in elevated legalese, “I mean, this is bizarre shit.”
