Apportioning the Products of Others' Work

Caroline went back to Boston. The first day of her new job is today. She seems to have had a good time.
The block party came off very well and the neighborhood is the better for it. A lot of effort and optimism in the face of bad weather. Surprisingly worthwhile.
I was tired last night and decided to do very little. Mom and Ned love 90 Day Fiance and I watched some of it with them and became a Socialist. Some people are too dumb to take care of themselves and it is up to me to run their lives.

Former world No. 1 golfer David Duval strung together a triple bogey, a quadruple bogey and a near-record 14 on the seventh hole at Royal Portrush, on his way to a 91 in the first round of the British Open. Duval’s round also included multiple penalties for a shot with the wrong ball and losing two balls.

Reparations is a wonderful Old Testament idea. It hinges upon inherited guilt. The sins of the father are visited upon the sons. Soon you will be responsible for your grandfather's parking tickets--and for the fact that he was a scofflaw. This ancient thinking has a lot of tributaries. Do you think we will start ignoring illnesses because they are just retributions for previous sins? So illness and injury are actually social justice.
It will make health care cheaper and we can use the saved money for reparations.

Raj Chetty is a big deal in economics. His area of interest is inequality. This is a nugget: He has found that opportunity does not correlate with many traditional economic measures, such as employment or wage growth. In the search for opportunity’s cause, he is instead focusing on an idea borrowed from sociology: social capital. The term refers broadly to the set of connections that ease a person’s way through the world, providing support and inspiration and opening doors.

The Berkeley City Council unanimously passed an ordinance replacing more than two dozen terms in the municipal code with gender-neutral alternatives. For example, a “sportsman” is now a “hunter,” a “bondsman” is now a “bonds-person,” “manpower” is now “human effort,” and “fraternity” and “sorority” are now “collegiate Greek system residence.”

Recent tabulations show a dramatic drop in the price index for Personal Computers, which quickly falls by half from 100 in January 1998 to below 50 by the end of 1999, and then falls by half again by early 2002, and by again by the end of 2005, by another half at the end of 2011, and by almost another half by 2018. Over the entire 21.5 year period, the quality-adjusted CPI for Personal Computers fell by more than 96% (vs. 57.6% for the overall CPI).



             Apportioning the Products of Others' Work

One of the hallmarks of the revolutionary philosophies of the last two centuries is the anger at how people, working, are separated from their products. The alienation of the worker from his work and production is a constant negative theme. But what about the one concrete product of work: Wages?

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is a slogan first used by Louis Blanc in 1851 (although an earlier version of the saying appeared in Étienne-Gabriel Morelly's The Code of Nature) and popularized by Karl Marx in his 1875 Critique of the Gotha Program. It describes one of the strange, one-way streets of communism. Interestingly, Marx says that in the "lower," i.e. "earlier," phase of communism,  "the individual receives from society exactly what he gives to it" and advocates remuneration in the form of labor vouchers as opposed to money--so no "according to his needs" there. The principle refers to free flow of productivity and capital for the betterment of all. Underlying it is the confidence in a stateless, lawless, profitless economy that everyone shares in equally.

Setting aside the practical questions, what would be the objective of tearing down the most successful economic and social system in the history of carbon- based beings to implement it? To do the experiment? The success of the West's culture and economy of free trade over the last two hundred fifty or so years is undeniable. And that success, although understandably uneven, has occurred across the board. It has raised all boats.

I would say that it is unlikely that the institution of the socialist maxim would improve the situation of those who have less than others in the modern state; the modern economy is simply too productive. The relatively poor in the modern West live like potentates of the Middle Ages. More, its productivity has been proven; the culture-smashing socialist/communists have only a coffeehouse thesis and it has failed everywhere it's been tried. So, if it's unlikely that such a revolution would benefit the less successful in the modern world as much as the current economic/political culture does, that implies another motive in its implementation. Like envy. Or revenge for some unclear offense. Or it may well be that this is just a solution brought forward for a now dissipated problem, like the Eastern European anarchists who migrated to Chicago in the nineteenth century, furious at the czar. They stayed furious, even when their fury had no target.

These are slogans--and motives--and maybe therapies--that benefit the leaders more than the disciples. But that reverence for the worker's product seems to have limits; there is certainly no reluctance to taking the product of the worker, earnings, through taxation. For people who claim to be concerned with the worker and his reward, these people are certainly eager to separate him from it. It makes you wonder if they are actually thinking something else.
