Sowell #1

Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: Equality. But notice the difference: While democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.--de Tocqueville

Nice weekend. I'm taking this online course and am just overwhelmed with material.
Dinner last night with Chris at Mineo's.

The controversy over the Women's Soccer was unfortunate. I haven't followed it closely but I would love to have a few areas in life where one's politics are peripheral.

Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news. It will not be good for anybody. And, as is always shown from the Kennedys to Hilary to Simpson, justice does not always quite work if you are rich, important or judged by popular vote.

If you work at Airbnb and want to date a co-worker, you get just one shot to ask them out. “You can only ask another employee on a date once, and it can’t be someone in your chain of management, so not your boss or someone on your team,” an Airbnb employee told MarketWatch, referring to training he received at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. And, yes, a vague response like “I’m washing my hair that night” counts as a “no.” Google and Facebook  also have policies barring employees from asking out a coworker more than once.
New research shows that while cars are safer than they've ever been, women are at far greater risk of suffering serious or fatal injuries in a collision compared to men. And a major reason why, experts say, is because automotive safety tests are conducted almost exclusively with crash test dummies modeled after men.
But you could have guessed that.

Adm. William Moran, who was to take over as the Navy’s top officer, is stepping down over his association with a former naval officer who had been investigated for inappropriate conduct, U.S. military officials said.
There is some bizarre sociology goin' on out there from such esteemed projects as World Inequality Lab, a research project in over 70 countries based at the Paris School of Economics, and co-authored by the French economist Thomas Piketty. Their target is differences among people. The people who love diversity have a hard time with differences.
In one, Belmi and Neale say many scholars have suggested that social inequalities persist because of systemic prejudice that makes it difficult for those at the bottom to improve their standing. They say mainstream institutions should recognize the value and social norms of under-represented groups. “Structural inequalities may be hard to dismantle,” they write, “because those who wield the most influence are motivated to preserve their advantages.”
Astonishing.

Iran confirmed that it was enriching uranium at levels that breach the 2015 nuclear agreement, leaving France, Britain and Germany with delicate decisions in the coming days over how to respond.(wsj)

                                          Sowell #1

Our children and grandchildren may yet curse the day we began hyping race and ethnicity. There are countries where that has led to slaughters in the streets but you cannot name a country where it has led to greater harmony.

Activism is a way for useless people to feel important, even if the consequences of their activism are counterproductive for those they claim to be helping and damaging to the fabric of society as a whole.

One of the sad signs of our times is that we have demonized those who produce, subsidized those who refuse to produce, and canonized those who complain.

The old adage about giving a man a fish versus teaching him how to fish has been updated by a reader: Give a man a fish and he will ask for tartar sauce and French fries! Moreover, some politician who wants his vote will declare all these things to be among his “basic rights.”

Thanksgiving may be our most old-fashioned holiday. Gratitude itself seems out of date at a time when so many people feel “entitled” to whatever they get—and indignant that they didn’t get more.

It is a little much when people come to this country preaching hatred against others and demanding tolerance for themselves.
