Smug Shot

The downsides of free trade cannot obscure either its fundamental morality or the proven pain and inefficacy of the lone alternative, protectionism.--Perry

Caroline got in in the afternoon.
We went to Casbah with the Muellers and then dispersed to dinner. Mom and I went to Zinho, Ned, Chris, Caroline and Thomas went to Mad Mex. As they walked in, the hostess accidentally hit Ned in the face with their wooden menu, cut his mouth and loosened several teeth.  They went to Pamela's today and were unhurt.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in a  report released in May concluded that the average e-scooter has a life span of just three months.

Unionized campaign organizers working for Sen. Bernie Sanders’s presidential effort are battling with its management, arguing that the compensation and treatment they are receiving does not meet the standards Sanders espouses in his rhetoric, according to internal communications. Campaign field hires have demanded an annual salary they say would be equivalent to a $15-an-hour wage, which Sanders for years has said should be the federal minimum.

According to Nasdaq.com, as of the end of last year the bank had total assets of 1.541 trillion dollars and total liabilities of 1.469 trillion dollars. According to Wall Street On Parade, the bank had 49 trillion dollars in exposure to derivatives as of the end of last year.

We have coined words after the moon, such as lunacy (insanity), moonshine (illicit liquor; nonsense), and mooncalf (simpleton). A Monday is, literally speaking, a moon-day. A month is, literally, the time it takes for the moon to make a trip around us. Other moon words: meniscus, superlunary, lunate, lunule.

This is an interesting point. Although early experimenters in physics and chemistry generally had to build one apparatus to test each hypothesis, modern researchers gather reams of data and run a large number of statistical tests on it. Many big institutions with good computer systems do this all the time. That increases the chance that the researchers will find spurious correlations, especially if they choose which tests to perform based on the results of previous tests. This problem is especially severe for fields like economics and biostatistics that rely on observational data not produced in a lab, since running test after test can be accomplished with the press of a button.

National Incidence Study of Abuse and Neglect reported: “Children in low socioeconomic status households. . . . experienced some type of maltreatment at more than 5 times the rate of other children; they were more than 3 times as likely to be abused and about 7 times as likely to be neglected”).

Good news. The nation of the Kaiser and Hitler has some opinions on the American democracy. “The strength of America, from my perspective, is that it’s a country in which people from many different nationalities have contributed,” Merkel told reporters in Berlin on Friday.

Over most of the last several decades, the three items that have increased the most in price are: a) Hospital Services (+210%), b) College Tuition and Fees (+188%) and c) College Textbooks (+182.5) compared to the overall increase in the CPI for All Items of 57.6%.

On this day in 1969, Armstrong walked on the moon.

Democrat State Rep Ilhan Omar, devoid of her hijab, apparently was arrested in 2013 for trespassing. She was booked at the Hennepin County Jail “to prevent further criminal conduct.” She was described as “mad/angry and uncooperative” by arresting officers. (Snopes says this is a true story.)
Criminal behavior does not disqualify one from positions of government leadership. Indeed, it is an American tradition. Some of our most powerful and important leaders have been criminals, either indicted or unindicted. Ms. Omar might well be taking the path of other, more famous predecessors who do not deign to live by the limiting standards of us little people.
She currently is being targeted over a number of new allegations, some quite significant, none proven. One is the accusation that she married her brother. Most are allegations of perjury. It might be Kavanaugh smear, or not. We don't know and, as is likely with those at the public trough, we never will.
The only thing certain is that she is not Caesar's wife.
